Zingiber cassumunar is a species of plant in the ginger family, it is also a relative of galangal. It is called plai (ไพล) in Thailand, it is used medicinally in massage and in food in Thailand, and somewhat resembles ginger root or galangal. In aromatherapy, plai oil is used as an essential oil and is believed to relieve pain and inflammation. It is also known as ponlei (ពន្លៃ) in Cambodia.
Several authors stress that it relieves pain quickly and effectively.
Unlike the ginger that we use in culinary preparations
known for its stimulating and warming properties, Plai is refreshing.
On a small surface (joint for example) it can be applied pure. It will be diluted in a
vegetable oil (arnica, St. John’s wort, passion fruit) for larger areas: 5 to 10%.
In massage: 1% with the vegetable oils mentioned above.
